I'm challenging myself to eat only local food, all month long. My version of the 100-Mile Diet, if you like. We've have such a wealth of food here in Ontario that it's a shame I resort so often to packaged garbage. And since it's August, high time for food producers, I shouldn't have too much trouble finding fresh and delicious!
The Main Rule:
Eat only foods that are from within 100 miles, or at least marked "Ontario" (as most of the food-producing regions of Ontario are within 100 miles from me)
The Exceptions
- I may end up using the olive oil and Camargue salt that I bought in Provence, France 2 weeks ago. Since, you know, it was local where I bought it!
- One thing I purchased was bread from a farmer's market vendor. I know the wheat to make the flour likely didn't come from here, but I bought the bread from the person who made it, and it's a small family business, so I count that.
- If I'm invited for dinner at somebody's house. I can't very well insist on all-local (but depending on who it is, I may suggest it. . . )
- Special events - so far, I think this will only include the Dinner Boat Cruise that a double birthday for my two aunts (50th and 70th).
The Tricky Parts
- I have not yet found a replacement for my morning cereal. Local cereal, anyone?
- I have not yet found any local butter for my toast, if I'm eating that in place of cereal. Sure, I have jam, but I prefer something a bit less sweet in the mornings. Hm.
Stay tuned for regular updates as I go through my month. And wish me luck!
